Kids Perspective:
Review by Caiden, Age 11 and Sabina, Age 9

We were pretty excited to check out this robot and see all the things he could do. The directions were a little hard to understand sometimes and we had to unbuild and then rebuild several times. It took us about 4 hours to build the robot before we got it right.

After we got M.A.X. up and running, it was a little hard to get him to respond to the list of commands. We didn’t know you had to unlock certain levels first. We really like asking M.A.X. to tell us a joke – he can be really funny.

We have now unlocked level 3 and M.A.X. can play a new game called “Would you Rather” and he can respond to “Let’s Dance” – we have had some fun with that one.

We would definitely recommend this robot – it’s a fun way to practice your engineering skills and then just have some fun with a robot that responds to you.

Parent Perspective:

This is a really fun robot that kids can build themselves, but depending on their age and experience, may need a parent to assist in the assembly. Once constructed, the Mecanno M.A.X. provides great entertainment once you understand how to interact with him.

We love how this product provides additional ways to interact after the initial build.

Cons

  • The instructions for the Mecanno M.A.X. can be challenging to follow during some of the build, resulting in the need to unbuild something identified as incorrect a few steps later.
  • The pictures-only instructions didn’t always indicate what pieces were to go where, causing some confusion as there are many pieces to this robot.
  • The parts come bagged separately, but do not tie back to the building process.
  • The overall building process was lengthy, taking our team of 2 nearly 4 hours to complete.
  • Once assembled, you will need to download the latest software to make M.A.X. work properly, which wasn’t obvious in the instructions.
  • There is no indication what you need to do to unlock new commands or how to move to different levels or access new features.
